“The food movement has been slow to recognise the fact that worker rights and working conditions should be a key part of any discussion about the ethics of food. Reforms to the food system need to incorporate workers and their welfare, not just better farming practices, more humane treatment of animals, and other measures focusing on food as an end product. Food is also a process, and the people involved in that process have a right to fair treatment, something they don’t have currently. The continued marginalisation of farmworkers and the focus on other issues in the food movement speaks poorly of the movement overall, and reveals some telling attitudes about labour, race, and entitlement.”

Went to go see this film yesterday at the closing night of Cine Las Americas Film Festival in Austin. It is so nice to finally see high quality features coming out of Paraguay doing well on the festival circuit. Especially one co-directed by a woman. This is a product of Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori’s direction and vision. A surprisingly hilarious thriller about a boy (Victor) who, more than anything, wants to purchase a cell phone with a camcorder on it so he can be on tv. The story takes place in all too familiar labyrinthine Mercado 4. Where my tia and bela would once take us to go get new clothes on the cheap.

This awesome dude drove us around and kept us very entertained in Haiti for an entire month while working on a multimedia project with Cine Institute in Jacmel. He told us he used to ask his mom for juice a lot when he was little. So eventually she just started calling him “Juice”. You are what you eat, or drink, I guess. Bon bagay mwen zanmi!

Fatoumata Diawara at Webeon Festival in Austin - 04.07.2013

Fatou is a guitarist and singer from Mali. Her show today at Webeon World Music Festival in Austin was perhaps my favorite. This woman is so talented and beautiful. At various points throughout the show she taught the audience different dance moves from Africa. Fatou also spoke on Mali and the recent religious war that’s been declared on music . She emphasized the importance of music not only to Malian culture and history but to Africa and the world, for it is “the only language that knows and teaches peace”. If you do not yet know her music go ahead and drift off with the sounds of her mesmerizing voice…

Centro de Asunción a los principios de la dictadura de Stroessner circa 1950’s.

Estas fotos fueron tomadas por mi abuelo en los años cincuenta, a principios de la dictadura de Alfredo Stroessner. Me fascina el contraste entre los huecos de bala en el edificio y como la gente y la vida se continua moviendo por fuera en las calles. Las fotos mostradas aqui capturan un momento fuerte de la historia paraguaya. Desde 1954 hasta 1989 Stroessner reinó sobre el Paraguay por 35 años sin interrupción. Esos años se marcaron por sus estrategias opresivas y torturadoras, por el populismo, clientelismo y censura….. Aqui en blanco y negro se revela algo de ese tiempo.

These photos were taken by my abuelo in the fifties at the beginning of Alfredo Stroessner’s dictatorship. He ruled for 35 years with the Colorado party. I am fascinated by the contrasts in these photos and by the apparent life in the streets despite the terrible political violence of the time. From 1954 to 1989 Stroessner ruled like a true Latin American dictator and caudillo. The authoritarian regime was incredibly oppressive and torturous. Stroessner used tactics of patronage, clientelism, censorship in his politics…. Here in black and white these photos take us to that time.
